FOODFIC: City of Ashes – Cassandra Clare

Jace Wayland is drinking scotch.

Jace is a shadowhunter. He’s unshakable – his hands had always been as steady as his heartbeat; he’s amusingly arrogant – “I prefer to think that I’m a liar in a way that’s uniquely my own;” he melts girls with his touch – she felt herself go fluid and pliant, stretching upward to twine her arms around his neck the way that a sunflower twists toward light.

And he orders scotch?

My problem with this is not that he’s too young* for such an old-man drink, nor that he lacks the sophistication to pull it off (see “amusingly arrogant” above); it’s that I feel scotch is a “wanna-be” drink. It’s what people order when they want to impress someone or portray themselves as something other than they are.

The beauty of Jace is that he is who he is – he says what’s on his mind and he does as he pleases. So I say, let him drink something bold (tequila?), rugged (a black lager?), or wild (Jaeger?). Or maybe give him a strawberry margarita and God help the barfly who teases him for it!

As for me, I’ll stick to wine so that you'll think I'm wonderfully worldly and refined. :) Cheers!

*I, of course, do not condone underage drinking (Jace is only 17), but I’ll leave that discussion for another time so as not to drift too far from my point.

  14. A clever idea you have here. I like to work around food. It adds atmosphere and color, to name a few. The following is from my novel, Backstage at the White House--"Sue Ann's praise of the midday feast was well-deserved. It was as if the chef was tired of pimento cheese and egg salad too, for Ellie's request had brought from the kitchen a large silver platter centered with cold roast chicken and surrounded by vegetables and cheeses. A smaller companion platter held a chafing dish of chocolate fondue, accompanied by plump, deep-red strawberries. It delighted the eye, and as Sue Ann pointed out, was more healthy than fattening if one just ever so lightly dipped the tip of one's strawberry into the warm brown cream."

  15. Hi, nice idea for a blog! In my novel, Goodbye Milky Way - An Earth in Jeopardy Adventure, eating is a prominent activity for a few of the characters. My favorite scene is when George Blocker, Canadian geophysicist, makes and plates his favorite omelet. The process triggers a latent feeling of doom about what might be happening to the Earth's tectonic plates. (No pun intended.)

  16. I'm reading the book High Heels to Wagon Wheels and I just love it. She is a professional [in her high heels] stoping in Oklahoma on her way to her new life in Chicago. Here she meets the man of her dreams, a cowboy. She is cooking up exotic vegeterian dishes, Asian side dishes etc. and he likes to just throw a steak on the grill. It's a true story and she has a blog on the internet about her life with him.

  17. I just finished reading The Island by Elin Hilderbrand. The fammily takes a one month vacation away from their problems in the family cottage in Nantucket. The meals consist of mostly picnic lunches and things cooked on the grill for all the food has to be brought to the island from town everyday. Alot of wine is consumed while they try to cope with their problems. Paula

I respectfully disagree. Just as there are wine afficionados, there are Scotch afficionados. Now, I have not read the book you are reviewing (I don't really get into paranormal). However, I can tell you from primary experience that there are bold Scotches, smokey Scotches, sophisticated Scotches ... if you think all Scotch is J&B, that's like thinking all wine is Chardonnay.
